The Nifty January 2020 futures were at 14,596.15, a premium of 31.3 points compared with the Nifty's spot closing of 14,564.85.
Turnover on the National Stock Exchange's futures & options (F&O) segment was Rs 42.98 lakh crore compared with Rs 25.88 lakh crore in the previous session.
In the cash market, the Nifty 50 index closed 1.4 points higher at 14,564.85.
The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of market's expectation of volatility over the near term, rose 1.94% to 23.2925.
The Nifty option chain for 28 January 2020 expiry showed maximum call OI of 23.28 lakh contracts at the 15,000 strike price. Maximum put OI of 31.32 lakh contracts was seen at 14,000 strike price.
Bharti Airtel, SBI and Tata Motors were the top traded stock futures contracts in F&O segment for January expiry.
The January 2020 F&O contracts will expire on 28 January 2020.
